BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — All-Star weekend kicked off in Central Illinois as several area athletes suited up for the last high school football game of the school year.
The Shriners’ All-Star Game was held at Illinois Wesleyan University this year, and several local athletes shone.
Rigeview-Lexington’s Joe Cheever converts a key first down, which led to a Team Red field goal to go up 3-0 early.
But Team Blue’s defense was superb, including another Ridgeview-Lexington playe — this time, Bryce Cloudt, who had a big tackle in the game.
El Paso-Gridley’s Nolan Whitman was everywhere in the first half and even shares a big sack for Team Blue to help them hold a 17-3 lead.
U-High’s Chenzo Cottone had a nice interception, which set up a great return, breaking several tackles and giving the team great field position, helping Team Red score to make it 10 to 17.
East Peoria receiver Aidin Hindert breaks past the defense wide open for the catch with no one in front of him for the long touchdown, but a failed extra point leaves Team Red trailing 17-16.
An obscure all-star game rule that allows the losing team to get the ball back if the game is under two minutes. This gives Team Red a chance, but their field goal to win is blocked as time expires, giving Team Blue the 17 to 16 win.
Hindert and Cottone win Red’s Offensive and Defensive Player of the Game awards.
