SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WMBD) — The Illinois State Police warned the public on Monday about a new text scam circulating across the state.
Scammers claiming to be from the state police will text victims and claim a violation has been detected in connection to the victim’s vehicle, according to a state police Facebook post.
The scammer will threaten legal action if their victims don’t follow a link to pay them.
“Scammers often use fake websites and urgent language to pressure victims into paying quickly,” the post said.
The state police warns that it will never send text messages demanding immediate payment or threatening legal action.
Anyone who receives these text messages is encouraged not to click any links or provide any personal information. Illinois residents can confirm any traffic or vehicle matters through the state’s official website.
