MCLEAN COUNTY, Ill. (WMBD) — The Unit 5 Esports team walked away from the state tournament with an historic finish and some shiny hardware.
The history-making began at Sectionals, the qualifier for state, where the team finished first in five of the six possible events, according to a post on the district’s Facebook page.
The post said that it is the most by any school in Illinois High School Association esports history.
At the state tournament, in Evergreen Park on Saturday, May 2, the team walked away with three medals, getting first in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, second in Rocket League, and third in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Crew Battle.
The Mario Kart team entered the tournament as a 7 seed. It worked its way through the tournament, losing only game one of the finals to Lane Tech College Prep High School before beating them in the second game to secure the state championship, according to IHSA’s website.
In Rocket League, the team entered the tournament as a 4 seed and advanced to round 3, where they lost to Jones College Prep. After working their way through the Losers’ bracket, the team faced Jones again in the finals, where they took second, IHSA said.
According to the website, Jones College Prep. did not lose a single round throughout the whole Rocket League tournament.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Crew Battle, they entered as the 6 seed, lost in the third round to eventual champion Amos Alonzo Stagg High School, and finished third.
