BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — A man was arrested Friday night after allegedly stealing an ambulance in Bloomington.
Dennis Montgomery, 34, was arrested on charges including burglary and theft, according to court documents.
On April 17, a crew member of the Bloomington Fire Department reported that the ambulance had been taken outside of the Grossinger Motors Arena.
At around 8:30 p.m., officers with the Bloomington Police Department found the unoccupied ambulance parked near the DB Plasma Donation Centre on West Washington Street, just a few blocks away from the arena.
Police went to the parking lot of the plasma center and found Montgomery. Records say one of the officers recognized Montgomery from an earlier incident that same night.
Montgomery was allegedly arrested and taken to the McLean County Detention Facility, which is also near the Grossinger Motors Arena. He had been released from custody.
A public safety surveillance camera in the Downtown area recorded a man who looked like Montgomery at the arena near where the ambulance had been parked.
Records say that Montgomery told police he was inside the ambulance but another man had driven it while he was in the back. He allegedly said that he got into the back of the ambulance and searched for medications.
During his arrest, Montgomery allegedly had a neon-colored Bloomington Fire Department vest hidden in his clothing that said “Fire Rescue” on it. The vest was later confirmed to be stolen from the ambulance.
