BLOOMINGTON – Midwest Food Bank has set up a satellite distribution on the east coast.
The organization said it has begun a monthly remote distribution in Belle, WV, 12 miles southeast of Charleston.
The food bank said that once a month, a truckload of food will travel to Belle for a single day distribution. There are currently 12 partner agencies who will receive the food to distribute to those in need. The first truckload of food will leave MFB Bloomington-Normal Wednesday at 4 a.m.
“Studies show one in five children in West Virginia struggle with food insecurity,“ said MFB Bloomington-Normal executive director Tara Ingham in a news release. “We are honored to begin serving those in need in this area.”
The Twin-Cities organization supports other remote distribution in Fairfield, Ill., Stanton, Ky, and New York City. The satellite distribution model involves volunteers running distributions usually at loaned spaces.
Midwest Food Bank has ten locations, eight in the U.S., and one each in East Africa and Haiti.
