BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — A white nationalist rally could occur later this month in Bloomington, according to a flyer posted around the city and on social media.
Facebook communities linked to the Twin Cities as well as the Illinois subreddit posted images of the pink flyer with a white nationalist symbol on top. The flyer claims there will be a march in the downtown area during the Farmer’s Market on Aug. 30.
“We have the White House, Congress, the courts and the Bloomington Mayor,” said the flyer. “Now it’s time to take back our state.”
City officials responded by saying there was no permit issued for a rally or a march. None have even been applied for. City Hall says they are aware of the flyer and the proposed march.
“The origin of the flyers is unknown, and the city is looking into the matter. The city is not endorsing it. Bloomington is a community that values respect, inclusion, and safety for all residents,” the statement said. “While people have the right to gather peacefully, public safety remains our priority.”
McLean County Sheriff Matt Lane said he is “in contact with the Bloomington Police Department and taking this very seriously.”
