Auditor general: Thousands of dead people received medical benefits

By Illinois News Network

SPRINGFIELD – Do you see dead people? The Auditor General does.

More than $3.5 million in medical costs were paid to more than 1,100 dead people in Illinois last fiscal year, according to the state’s Auditor General. The audit of the Department of Healthcare and Family Services also indicates nearly 6,000 dead people were considered eligible for medical services. Meanwhile, 180 recipients were enrolled in managed care more than three months after they died.

The auditor recommends the state improve its system to ensure death dates for current enrollees are correctly entered and to recover payments made in error.

A previous Associated Press report stated more than $12 million was paid out to dead people in 2013.

I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…
