WELLINGTON, Fla. – A former Lexington resident now living in Florida near the path of Hurricane Matthew says inland areas were spared any severe weather.
Perry Cole said his area of Palm Beach County about 20 miles from the Atlantic Ocean only experienced thunderstorms.
“We get a lot of rain for a couple hours a day, not a huge amount, and it was almost like that,” Cole told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin. “It was almost no more than a thunderstorm. We got lucky.”
Cole said damage was reported closer to the Atlantic.
“There are a lot of houses around our area, more towards the water, that had tree damage and lost power but so far that’s really all we’ve heard,” Cole said. “No casualties and thank God no life lost. Again, we got lucky.”
Cole admits he’s curious to see 120 mile-per-hour winds, but he’s also glad that the hurricane avoided most of southern Florida.
