BLOOMINGTON – The annual Criterium bicycle race in downtown Bloomington could be adding a new sponsor this year.
Bloomington Alderwoman Karen Schmidt said the City Council will vote Monday on making the race a city sponsored and supported event. She said doing this will hopefully attract other sponsors for the event.
“Sponsorship carries with it, really, city support for things like our sound stage and putting the barricades up,” she said.
Schmidt explained the race used to be a huge event in the 1980s, but hasn’t been the same since its return a few years ago.
“We’re also going to be doing children’s races. Those are for fun, of course,” said Schmidt. “This year we’re going to have a kids’ corner. There’s going to be a lot more activities for children and we hope that that encourages families to come out.”
The Criterium will take place Aug. 27.
