SPRINGFIELD – Many people will be on a boat this weekend.
The weather around Illinois looks like it will be perfect to be on the water and as summer has its unofficial kickoff authorities are reminding people to be safe on the water.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources said don’t drink and boat and make sure before you get on the water that you have all the gear that you are required to carry by law.
“You have to have a life jacket or a personal flotation device on board for every person and children who are under 13 unless they are in a large cabin cruiser, are below deck or on private property,” IDNR spokesman Chris Young said.
The rules are that anyone under 13 must wear a life jacket while on a boat and everyone has to wear one when skiing or tubing or when on a jet ski.
