SPRINGFIELD – In recent months, there have been jitters about Illinois driver’s licenses not being in compliance with federal standards.
After a temporary reprieve from federal Homeland Security officials that allowed residents to still board flights and use federal facilities, Secretary of State Jesse White has unveiled his plan to comply with the federal Real ID act. Secretary White reveals there will be historic change in the way driver’s license facilities do business next month.
“Beginning in late June, applicants visiting driver services facilities will no longer be issued new permanent drivers licenses or ID cards at the end of the application process,” said White. “Instead, they will leave the facility with a temporary secure paper driver license.”
White says this will alleviate worries about lack of airline access with that temporary license. The United States Department of Homeland Security says they will accept the temporary paper licenses along with your old license when trying to board a plane.
The new, more secure license will arrive in your mail within 15 days of requesting one.
Federal officials recently gave Illinois until January 2018 to become Real ID Act compliant.
