NORMAL – Statistics show one-in-five women will experience sexual assault, and that’s why U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Taylorville) spoke with students at Illinois State University Tuesday afternoon about what’s being done to combat the issue on their campus.
“What are they doing now to bring awareness to the problem of sexual assault on campus? What kind of training methods are they implementing?” said Davis. “What are working? What aren’t working? What are effective? What aren’t effective?
“Heard back from them that there are very good methods of training being used at each and every campus that we visited. (I) heard back from them too that there are things that might work better.”
Davis had also spoken to students at the University of Illinois in Champaign and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.
“(I) talked to some of the students who were here at our roundtable right after the event today and asked them what they’re doing at their individual fraternity houses or sorority houses or off-campus places to ensure that they’re watching out for possible sexual assault victims,” he said.
Davis added one strategy can simply be getting people to talk about these crimes, as most sexual assaults go unreported.
