BLOOMINGTON – The McLean County Board has added a new member and is losing one too.
Scott Murphy, 57, of Downs was appointed unanimously on Tuesday to serve the remainder of Matt Sorensen’s term in District 2 as he awaits trial on wire fraud charges. Murphy runs a seed equipment business in Lexington.
While there are fewer in agriculture on the board than there once were, Murphy said that’s not necessarily his main focus.
“I’m not coming here with an agenda to say ‘I’m going to make sure agriculture gets this and this,’ ” Murphy said. “I’m coming here as a farmer because that’s what I am.”
Murphy, a Republican, added he is pro-business.
“I’m not in favor of government telling people what they can and can’t do expect when it involves other people,” Murphy said.
Murphy, who was chosen from among five candidates, is also running for the four-year term in November.
The County Board has another vacancy as Paul Finch, a first-termer from District 6 Normal, has taken a job in Madison, Wisconsin. The board is taking application for the seat before March 3 at noon and plans to make an appointment at the March 15 meeting.
