NORMAL – Illinois State University is banning hoverboards on university housing property and in the dining halls.
Students have until Feb. 10 to remove their hoverboards, otherwise they will be written up for a policy violation and referred to the Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution office.
“The safety concern comes from a number of incidents around the United States of various models of these hoverboards having problems with the batteries, catching fire while recharging,” ISU spokesman Eric Jome said. “A number of other universities have taken this kind of measure as well.”
Illinois Wesleyan University and Heartland Community College already ban hoverboards on campus, but Jome said ISU officials haven’t discussed a campus-wide ban. Jome said people can still ride hoverboards on campus, as long as they do it safely and legally.
