BLOOMINGTON- An offensive shooting gallery and two goals from Patrick Curry gave the Bloomington Thunder a 2-1 road win over the Madison Capitols Saturday night. With 41 shots on net, the Thunder pulled out the win in the third period and held on for their second win of the weekend. The Thunder scored six on 80 shots in the weekend to take four standings points. The team improves to 5-5-0 and halts Madison at a 5 game win streak, dealing them their third loss of the year.
Curry’s game winner came in the third period on a one timer from Blake Gober. With nine minutes to play, the Thunder caused a turnover that resulted in the game-winning goal. The Schaumburg, IL native now has three on the season including two game winners.
At the halfway point of the first period the Thunder were swarming the Capitols net but could not find the back of it. Pat Curry broke the ice in the opening frame with a tip at 11:17. The shot came from Brogan Rafferty (Quinnipiac University) who took his third assist of the season on the redirect.
After over 11 minutes of scoreless hockey, the Capitols decided 30 seconds was too long of a lead for the Thunder. Haralds Egle sent a cross crease pass to Charlie Gerard (Minnesota State University-Mankato) who slammed home his third of the year 24 seconds later to tie the game.
No goals were scored in the second period, but the netminders were active. Ryan Edquist (University of Minnesota) made 24 saves through two periods including a shorthanded breakaway for Logan Lambdin. He would finish the night with the loss but made 39 saves on 41 shots in the game. The Thunder’s goaltender Hayden Lavigne (University of Michigan) also stayed on his toes with 15 saves through two periods and a game total of 24. The Capitols had chances on the power play but couldn’t beat the future Wolverine to break a scoreless tie.
Lavigne earned his fifth win of the season while the rookie goalie for Madison was dealt his first loss of his USHL career. The Thunder leapfrog the Caps in the standings with the win.
