BURLINGTON, Iowa – The Peoria Chiefs saw their win streak end at four as Burlington Bees third baseman Zach Houchins provided all the offense with two home runs in a 2-0 game Thursday night. The loss drops the Chiefs to 7-8 in the second half and 40-43 on the season heading into a four-game series at Clinton.
Both teams lost a runner at third base in the first inning. For the Chiefs Darren Seferina tried to go first to third on a one-out single by Harrison Bader but was thrown out by centerfielder Mike Hermosillo. The Chiefs did not score as Alex DeLeon grounded out to leave two on base. Burlington had two on and one out in the first when Trever Allen singled to left. As Bader threw home, Jake Yacinich fell down rounding third and was tagged out before the Bees left two on base.
Houchins hit a lead-off home run just over the left-field wall in the second inning for a 1-0 lead against Jhonny Polanco. In the fourth he crushed a two-out solo homer to left-center for a 2-0 Burlington lead.
Polanco (1-3) took the loss allowing two runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. The righty walked one, hit one, allowed two home runs and struck out two. Robby Rowland allowed one hit over a 1 1/3 shutout innings. Kevin Alexander allowed one hit over a shutout eighth inning and has not allowed a run since his return from the disabled list.
