SPRINGFIELD – The state is dishing out some $25 million a year to provide homes to inmates who should've already been released.
A Chicago Tribune investigation reveals about 1,250 inmates stay beyond their release date each year, mainly because they can't find suitable housing.
For example, those who are sex offenders have stringent terms to their parole and can't live near schools. But it costs the state about $2,200 to keep them on the inside. It'd cost about $2,000 if they were paroled.
