SPRINGFIELD – It’s advocacy with apple pie.
Members of the Gamaliel network are delivering the all-American dish – plus rice and beans – to local offices of congressmen and senators nationwide, calling attention to the Citizenship Act of 2021.
It’s a reboot of past efforts to allow 11 million undocumented people a path to citizenship. Maria Soto of Springfield said she is frustrated that others cannot have what she has: citizenship.
“We’re here to support the immigration reform bill,” Soto said before entering U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood’s (R-Dunlap) Springfield office. “It’s something that is needed; it’s beneficia not only for the immigrants, but for the whole country.”
LaHood’s office issued a statement saying his staff would review the bill.
