BLOOMINGTON – Miller Park Zoo announced two otter pups were born, one male and one female on February 25.
The otter pups’ mother, “Tallulah,” is doing great, and zoo visitors can see the family on a monitor in the Zoo hospital window.
According to Miller Park Zoo, this is the fifth litter for Tallulan, but it will be Spencer’s, the other male otter’s first-ever offspring.
“Otter pups are always great for our guests, and the river otter population in general,” said Miller Park Zoo Superintendent Jay Tetzloff. “We’re excited to watch them grow up, and I encourage people to stop by and see them.”

In a news release, Miller Park Zoo officials said North American River Otters rarely reproduce in zoos and aquariums; there have only been eight litters across 113 institutions accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in the last 12 months.
A typical litter is three pups but can be anywhere from one to five.
