BLOOMINGTON – The City of Bloomington Public Works Department is seeking feedback from the public on whether to remove the traffic signals on Front Street at Main Street and Center Street.
While working on sewers and sidewalks to prepare for resurfacing on Front Street, the Department found failed galvanized conduit and handholds that would cost $15,000 to $20,000 to repair.
At this point the signals exceeded their life expectancy.
“We’re looking at even getting rid of the traffic signals, making it more of a walkable area,” said Jim Karch, Bloomington Public Works Director. “So those are the things we’re looking at right now, instead of just doing things as we’ve always done them. We’re trying to look at innovative ways to make this a more walkable downtown.”
The Public Works Department is proposing removing the signals and adding pedestrian bump outs to increase pedestrian safety in accordance with the city’s Complete Streets Ordinance.
