BLOOMINGTON – The Michael Collins Foundation is gearing up for its annual MC Strong 5K later this month.
On April 22, members of the community are invited to participate in the third MC Strong 5K. Named after the late Michael Collins, the Foundation has four events each year, with money gained going to charities and various organizations in the community. The Foundation’s co-founder Kelly Collins explained the 5K has had a good turnout each year.
“We had over 1,100 participants [the first year], then the second year we had 650,” said Collins. “So this is our third year – our numbers are looking pretty good. We’re almost to 300 right now with two weeks out.”
Collins said they typically see a surge in 5K registrations as the deadline draws closer. Foundation spokesperson Gretchen Furler said information on the 5K and how to get involved are available on the organization’s website.
“Go to the website www.mcstrong.org and you can register online or you can send your paper copy in, and there’s an address to fill it out,” explained Furler. “The fee right now is $30 because it’s after April 2 but that’s still a good amount. Or you can pay for the virtual runner which is $30 and you’ll be guaranteed a dry fit shirt.”
Including the 5K, the Foundation holds a memorial baseball invite, a golf outing and an all-star baseball game later in the year.
