BLOOMINGTON – Bloomington mayoral candidate Ian Bayne said this week he doesn’t think Mayor Tari Renner has the backs of the city’s police. However, Renner tells WJBC that notion is “totally absurd.”
Renner explained he’s always had a great relationship with BPD.
“It’s why they’ve endorsed me several times when I ran for mayor,” said Renner. “In fact, Police Chief Brendan Heffner and I spoke this morning (Thursday) and he had alluded to this and said, you know, ‘this is just crazy.’”
Renner added he’s proud of the relationship he has with police.
“Mayoral candidates can just make stuff up. And Ian Bayne seems to be an expert at just making stuff up,” Renner said.
Renner said he’s ridden numerous times with police to see dilapidated properties. He was also invited by one of the top police officers in the city to go to Chicago and help pick up the award for the way Bloomington has been funding its police and fire pensions.
