NORMAL – A piece of Normal’s history may be demolished. the Illinois Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Children’s School Administration Building has been vacant for 30 years and is in bad condition.
Normal City Manager Mark Peterson does not agree with the Normal Historic Preservation commission and will recommend the demolition of the building.
Peterson said the old infirmary building adjacent to the administration will be restored.
“It’s probably, I would say of the two, it’s probably the more remarkable, the more significant building architecturally,” said Peterson. “We are delighted that that building is going to be saved. The property owner is going to use it at least in the short term as a studio for his artwork.”
Attempts to find a new owner who can redevelop the property have failed.
