NORMAL – Many drivers for First Student, responsible for getting Unit 5 students to and from school, are calling in sick on a daily basis.
Chris Kemper with First Student said it’s been difficult to recruit drivers.
“The driver shortage is really a national issue not only for school bus transportation, but for really any over the road transportation company any transportation company that requires a CDL, a commercial driver’s license.”
Kemper said if you want to drive for First Student in Bloomington-Normal, there is a $2,000 dollar sign on bonus.
Kemper is reporting three new drivers will join the company in this area soon.
Nearly 20 drivers called in sick Thursday.
