NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD) — The Normal Town Council approved an amendment to build two new apartment buildings on the west side of Normal, Monday night.
“These apartments are part of an annexation agreement that dates back to 2023. So we’ve been expecting this for quite a while,” said Mercy Davison, director of planning and zoning for the town. “That agreement pertained to a really large property that we annexed into the town.”
The new apartment buildings will be the first thing built on the 72 acres of land acquired by the town. The building will be identical and have 30 units per building. Davison said these buildings will provide some much-needed housing to the west side of Normal.
“We all know that we need new housing development, and we also know that we need different kinds of housing. So we need all kinds of housing. Non-Student multifamily is something that we need, and this is a great spot for it. So this will bring another 60 units of multifamily apartments to the community,” Davison said.
Located on the northwest corner of Parkside Road and West Hovey Street, housing will begin to expand in the area, which will provide homes for families, in a good location next to three different schools.
“If you take a look at the plan for the overall 72 acres, you’d see a mixture of all types of residential housing, including single-family detached, and those would be located closer to the existing residences up towards college and Parkside. And then from there, as it radiates out to the south and west,” she said.
