BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — The Streetscape project in downtown Bloomington is making more progress on sewer and infrastructure upgrades.
City workers began working on the 400 block of North Main Street, between Bobzbay Books on Market Street and Main Gallery 404 on Monroe Street. Work is expected to continue until the end of the year.
“This 400 block is going to be done by the end of this year, the end of this construction season,” said Jim Karch, director of engineering for the city of Bloomington.
Work on the 500 block of North Main, which began earlier this year, is going to finish up by the first week of June.
“The 500 block is actually getting done as we speak. They’re putting down the final layer of asphalt. By the end of the first week of June, that’ll be completely open as well,” said Karch.
Until then, the 400 to 500 blocks of North Main are completely closed off to cars. Pedestrians are still able to use the sidewalks to access businesses on the stretch.
“One of the best things that people need to know is our businesses are still open in downtown. Please come visit them. This is really important. We really want businesses to thrive in our downtown,” said Karch. “We know that once this is done, everybody is going to want to flock here. But even during construction, there’s still access to everywhere people want to go.”
Parking is still available in many areas in and outside of the buckle. A map of open parking areas can be found on the city of Bloomington’s website.
