NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD) — A garage received major damages and occupants were displaced after a fire broke out in Normal on Sunday.
The Normal Fire Department was called at 7:37 p.m. Sunday to the 1800 block of Johnson Drive which is on the town’s east side, on a report of heavy smoke and flames coming from the home. The alarm was upgraded and off-duty firefighters were called in to help, said Chief Mark Humer.

Bloomington’s Rapid Intervention Team was also called to the scene to assist, he said.
When firefighters arrived, they saw heavy fire on the back side of the one-family home. Firefighters began to extinguish the fire as well as cool the siding of a nearby home that had begun to get damaged from the heat, he said.
After 35 minutes, firefighters were able to bring the fire under control and continue checking and extinguishing hot spots. The fire remained mostly outside the home with large amounts of damage to the one-car garage, Humer said.
The resident of the home were able to escape without injury. A neighbor was evaluated for smoke inhalation, but declined further treatment or transport by paramedics., he said.
The home is insured. The occupants will be displaced until the utilities can be evaluated and safely restored. No damage estimate is available at this time.
No cause or damage estimate were given.
