CHICAGO – With the federal deadline less than one year away, Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is encouraging Illinoisans to “Get Real” and obtain a REAL ID.

Giannoulias said his office is kicking off a campaign to get people signed up who need one.

“Only about 23.5%, or just over 3 million Illinois residents, have REAL ID cards,” said Giannoulias. “We must do better and that is why we are ringing the alarm bell and kicking off this campaign. Our primary goal is getting the word out, so that a year from now we are not experiencing crazy lines at our DMV facilities and long lines at our airports.”

After the May 7, 2025 deadline, domestic travelers 18 and older on commercial flights must have a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state ID card. Travelers will still be able to board domestic flights with a U.S. passport, which is already REAL ID compliant. A REAL ID will also be required to enter some federal facilities such as courthouses and military bases.

The deadline for obtaining the REAL ID has been pushed back multiple times, most recently in 2022 when the Department of Homeland Security cited the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the state’s ability to issue licenses.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
