SPRINGFIELD – Students across Illinois may start learning new relaxation techniques in the classroom to lower their stress levels.

bill moving in the state capitol aims to lower students’ stress by encouraging school districts to have at least 20 minutes of instruction on relaxation activities each week. Suggested activities in the bill include mindful-based movements, yoga, stretching, meditation, breathing exercises, guided relaxation techniques, quiet time, walking and in-person conversation.

“Allocating at least 20 minutes per week for students to unwind and prioritize their mental health will alleviate the pressure to constantly engage in mental tasks, leading to improved academic performance,” said Sen. Rachel Ventura (D-Joliet), the bill’s sponsor in the Senate. “Purposeful relaxation time will empower students to develop effective stress and anxiety management strategies.”

The bill allows the school district to choose how to implement the relaxation activities, including in a P.E. class, an advisory class, or creating a new class. School districts may partner with a public or private community organization for help providing the relaxation activities to students.

More than 145,000 tweens and teens in the state have been diagnosed with depression, according to the National Alliance on Mental Health.

“We have all heard stories of teens struggling with mental health problems, especially as they progress through high school,” said State Representative Laura Faver Dias (D-Grayslake). “The prevalence of this issue should be enough to drive this home: kids need new tools to maintain emotional stability.”

The bill passed the House of Representatives’ Elementary & Secondary Education: School Curriculum & Policies Committee on Wednesday. The proposal has already passed the Illinois Senate.

Republicans have voted against the proposal.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
