NORMAL – The Special Olympics Illinois Summer Games are coming to the Twin Cities this weekend.

Thousands of athletes will come from across the state for competition’s held at Illinois State University, Normal Community High School and Kingsley Junior High.

The three day event will feature seven sports competition’s according to Director of State Championships for Special Olympics Illinois, Nate Henry.

“We have both Rhythmic and Artistic Gymnastics, Swimming, Soccer, Track and Field, Bocce, and Powerlifting. Those are our seven sports, all competing this year in different divisions for a state gold medal,” Henry said.

The Summer Games will begin on Friday and will run through the weekend culminating on Sunday. Henry says volunteers are still needed at all three sites.

“Saturday and Sunday being our biggest needs, we really need some help. There are a lot of things to do and a lot of cool things that are free and open to the public. We would love to see people come and stop at the volunteer tent if you want to help,” Henry said.

COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
