CHICAGO – The Republicans for governor and attorney general in Illinois picked up some police union endorsements today (Monday). Dave Dahl reports.

The Chicago and state Fraternal Order of Police are backing Sen. Darren Bailey (R-Xenia) for governor.

“If you think crime in Illinois is bad now,” said Bailey, “what in the world is it going to look like in 2023, when (Gov. JB) Pritzker’s no-cash-bail law opens up the prison doors, and he throws away the keys?

“It gets worse. With crime skyrocketing, families and businesses (are) fleeing the state, and our jobs are leaving with them.”

Downstate lawyer Tom DeVore is the unions’ choice for attorney general.

“Even though I don’t live in the city of Chicago, I am not one of those folks who believes that, well, that’s the city of Chicago’s problem; we live in a different part of the state. That’s not true.

“If you think that there’s not a collateral effect to us not taking the crime (seriously) that’s happening here, look at places like Champaign and Decatur. Those cities are starting to suffer from the same consequences. The collar counties as well – that’s all people talk about is this crime.”

During Bailey’s portion of Monday’s event, “We’re not going to take questions,” Chicago FOP Lodge 7 president John Catanzara told reporters, “so you don’t put your own spin on it.”

DeVore did take a question and a follow-up about the consent decree over Chicago, saying there must be a discussion among all involved and that he expects all police to act responsibly; bad apples are isolated cases.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
