LIVINGSTON COUNTY – The Livingston County Health Department reports a “sharp increase in COVID-19” as the county reports 83 new cases and one death.

Officials say the latest death is a female in her 40’s, increasing the county’s COVID-related deaths to 93.

Additionally, authorities report 83 new cases of the virus between July 27 through Aug. 8.

“Livingston County has seen a sharp increase in COVID-19 activity in recent weeks due to the Delta variant, said Erin Fogarty, Health Education & Marketing Director for the county. “Data show this variant to be more than twice as contagious as previous strains of the virus, with the highest spread of infections and severe outcomes occurring among unvaccinated populations.”

In total, the health department has received 126,579 test results. Officials report 5,019 tests came back positive, and 53 cases remain in isolation.

“We ask that everyone take action to protect not only themselves but everyone around them, particularly those with a compromised immune system or who cannot be vaccinated,” added Jackie Dever, LCHD Administrator. “It takes everyone working together to keep our community safe and healthy.”

The health department is holding vaccine clinics at 310 E. Torrance Ave., in Pontiac on Monday mornings from 8:00 – 12:00 p.m. and Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
