Gov. Pritzker signs birth control bill intended for over-the-counter availability

SPRINGFIELD – Illinoisans will soon be able to get contraceptives directly from pharmacists – without a doctor’s prescription.

“Today, Illinois becomes one of just a few jurisdictions in the United States that allows pharmacists to provide contraceptives directly,” said Amori Kalfeta, director of women’s and reproductive health for the ACLU of Illinois. “Nearly two-thirds of women between the ages of 15 and 49 in this country use contraceptives, but their ability to access this basic reproductive healthcare is under attack.”

One of the sponsors, State Rep. Michelle Mussman (D-Schaumburg), said the new law is about more than mere convenience. 

“Planned pregnancies have healthier outcomes for both mom and baby, which is important, because Illinois has a concerningly high rate of infant mortality,” said Mussman, “especially for women of color.”

The law, covering not just the Pill but also vaginal rings and topical patches, takes effect January 1.
