BLOOMINGTON –  When it comes down to the Presidential election, less than a week away, one Central Illinois Congressman says he thinks the United States will know the results on election day.

Speaking with WJBC’s Scott Miller, U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood (R-Dunlap), who also serves as co-chair of President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign in Illinois, says the results depend on election systems across the state.

“I hope so. That’s the goal. I think a lot of people are working very hard to make that happen. But it’s important that we have a fair and secure election. Listen, we have 50 different election systems across 50 different states, so it’s hard to determine that in other states. I will tell you this, in Illinois, I have confidence in our election commission, in our state how we run things.”

So far, 61 million people have voted in the general election.

“This will be the sixth cycle that we’ve done absentee voting. We do early voting in Illinois. There’s a huge amount of people that have already voted. We will know those tabulations on the election night. I’m confident in Illinois that we’ll know who won the state and the different races that are at stake in our country.”

LaHood said the problem lies with states like California and Colorado that have ballot harvesting.

“It’s hard to tell, and you gotta make sure that we have people in place that are monitoring watching, so there is no fraud or people taking advantage of the system.”

In Illinois, ballot harvesting is illegal. However, ballot harvesting is legal in California.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
