BLOOMINGTON – Some of the youngest children in District 87 will return to the classroom late next month, according to a plan presented to the school board Wednesday night.

No board action is required on a plan giving families of students in pre-kindergarten through the second grade the option of returning to the classroom twice a week starting October 26. They also can continue with remote learning five days a week.

Those choosing classroom learning would be split into two groups, one attending class Monday and Thursday, the other group attending school Tuesday and Friday.

Students continuing to receive all-remote instruction will be taught by District 87 staff, but they might be assigned a different teacher once the new plan starts next month.

Administrators set a goal to provide in-person learning for third, fourth, and fifth graders starting November 9, said District 87 spokesperson Julia Perez.

District 87 is still working out details for the return of junior high and high school students.

The district is moving forward with a back-to-school plan for the youngest students because they tend to have a more difficult time adjusting to remote learning, said Perez.

“There will be mandatory mask-wearing for all returning students, and social distancing will be required “as much as possible,” Perez said.

Meantime, all District 87 teachers are being told to report to their respective schools October 19.

All families will soon be asked to complete a survey for their views on in-person versus remote learning, said Perez.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
