SPRINGFIELD – Emphasizing there is still a long way to go before coronavirus is beaten, Gov. JB Pritzker and Illinois Department of Public Health director Dr. Ngozi Ezike (pictured) welcomed Illinoisans Friday to Phase Three of the state’s Restore Illinois program.

Outdoor dining is now available, as are state parks and expanded golf opportunities.

And, says Ezike, more contact tracing. “I want to let you know the importance of talking with the people who will be doing the contact tracing,” Ezike said at Friday’s coronavirus briefing. “You may get a call or a text informing you that you have been in contact with someone confirmed to have COVID-19. You might think, is this a hoax? But it’s very important that you talk to this person who reaches out to you – the contact tracer.”

Sangamon County Friday reported a 31-st death among 353 coronavirus cases. The state has 117,455 cases and 5,270 deaths.

Pritzker announced Friday that his coronavirus briefings from now on will only come as needed.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
