NORMAL – Illinois State University is offering pomp and circumstance under the most unusual of circumstances, a worldwide pandemic.

The university announced late Friday night it is offering students graduating this spring and summer a pair of opportunities to celebrate their achievements, including a recorded ceremony that will be available on ISU’s commencement website by next Thursday, May 7.

President Larry Dietz will be among the graduation speakers. Each graduate will receive in the mail copies of a special Commencement program book, tassel, alumni key chain, and diploma cover.

Spring and summer graduates who want the experience of walking across the stage will be able to participate in expanded winter commencement ceremonies, scheduled for December 11-12.

Graduation ceremonies, originally set for May 8-9, were called off as the campus in Normal closed down to slow the spread of COVID-19.

ISU said it is awarding 3,601 baccalaureate degrees and 726 graduate degrees.

More information is available on the university’s Graduation Services website.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
