NORMAL – A rental housing company is offering rent-free apartments to Illinois State University students in response to ISU’s announcement that all university operating housing will be closed until further notice.

Young America announced Thursday temporary housing for 100 students on a week-by-week basis.

“We expect there are some students who will have difficulty returning to a permanent home, and who still need to apply themselves to their university coursework,” said Young America Realty President Andy Netzer. “Yesterday’s news was probably not ideal for everyone, and we’re hopeful these efforts will help mitigate the stresses that some ISU students are experiencing.”

Temporary housing will be offered until university-owned, and university-operated housing reopens, or until the end of the original 202 spring semester. Units offered are furnished, have high-speed internet access included, and are within walking distance of Uptown Normal.

Temporary housing will require a $100 security deposit, government-issued Identification, and a copy of current university housing contract or proof of residency.

Rent-free housing is offered on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
