LEROY – Police are alerting residents to a “grandparent scam” that happened Wednesday in LeRoy.
Police said an 83-year-old woman received a call allegedly from her grandson asking her to wire him money because he was in jail. The caller advised the woman not to tell anyone.
Authorities said the woman was on her way to a Western Union, but decided to stop at the police station first. Officers were able to determine the woman’s grandson was not in jail and this was a scam call.
Police are advising residents to inform elder family members about scams and how to avoid them.
