LINCOLN — Jake Durflinger scored with 2:36 left in regulation to extend the Bloomington Thunder’s season-high point streak to six games with a 2-1 win over the Lincoln Stars on Friday night at the Ice Box.

Reigning USHL Goaltender of the Week Logan Halladay kept the Thunder right with the Stars all night and made 31 saves to help give Bloomington its fourth win in its last six games.

With the game tied at one in the final three minutes, the captain Durflinger got a feed from Mitchell Mattson and beat Stars goaltender Josef Korenar from the low slot to put Bloomington ahead for the first time in the game. Durflinger’s goal was his 10th of the season and the Thunder’s latest regulation goal this season to break a tie game.

But the Thunder had more work in front of them down the stretch. After Alec Mehr got whistled for a penalty with 32 seconds remaining in the game, Bloomington had to kill off another power play for the Stars, which started the night with the third-best home power play in the league. Bloomington got the job done and finished the night a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.

Bloomington tied the score in the early minutes of the third period, as former Lincoln player August von Ungern-Sternberg slammed home a rebound at the 5:56 mark of the final period. It was his 11th goal of his first season in Bloomington.

The only goal Halladay yielded came at even strength from Collin Peters with 45 seconds left in the second period. The Merrimack College commit hasn’t yielded more than two goals in six consecutive games, which is the best stretch of his three-year career.

The Thunder finish off the series with Lincoln on Saturday night. Faceoff is slated for 7:05 at the Ice Box.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
