BLOOMINGTON – A YouTube initiative that encourages participants to keep their promises to themselves and others has swept over Oakland Elementary School.
Students and staff have been participating in Because I Said I Would, in which promises are written on post it notes as reminders to fulfill them. Principal David LaFrance and several students presented their promises to District 87 school board members this past week. Superintendent Barry Reilly said the program is teaching students a great lesson.
“When you get groups of people who form good habits like that, pretty soon you’re developing very good people in the community,” Reilly said. “That’s what we want, so I was very excited to see Mr. LaFrance do this and I was very proud of the kids.”
Reilly had nothing but good things to say about the program.
“When we put these promises out there and we write things down or hand them to someone else, there’s more accountability,” said Reilly. “The more and more you do that, it can become habit.”
LaFrance and several students presented their promises to board members Wednesday night and even passed out Because I Said I Would Cards to the school board and others in attendance.
