Defense falters in Chiefs loss

PEORIA – The Peoria Chiefs made two errors and gave up four unearned runs in a 4-2 loss to the Fort Wayne Tincaps on Sunday. The loss drops the Chiefs to 28-15 in the second half and 61-50 overall.

The Chiefs started the scoring in the fourth against Fort Wayne starter Chris Huffman. Alex DeLeon led off with a ringing double to left and he scored easily when Paul DeJong tripled to center for the 1-0 Chiefs lead. DeJong scored on a sacrifice fly by Kenny Peoples-Walls to make it 2-0.

The Tincaps tied the game in the fifth against Chiefs starter Dewin Perez. Trae Santos led off with a single and Michael Miller reached on an error to put runners at first and second. Both men advanced 90 feet on a groundout by Henry Charles and scored on a double by Michael Gettys to make it 2-2.

The Tincaps got two more unearned runs against the Chiefs bullpen in the ninth. With one out Franmil Reyes walked and Nick Lomascolo was relieved by Kyle Grana. Luis Tejada should have been out on a foul popup that was dropped by DeLeon and he eventually singled to put runners at first and second and both men advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch. Reyes scored on a sacrifice fly by Santos and Tejada came home on a single by Miller for the 4-2 Tincaps lead.

Perez got the start and tied a career-high by pitching seven innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits and three walks, striking out three. Lomascolo pitched 1 1/3 hitless, walking one and being charged with an unearned run. Kyle Grana pitched one third of an inning, allowing one unearned run on two hits. Cody Schumacher came on to finish the top of the ninth, retiring the only batter he faced with a popup.
