Chiefs sweep LumberKings in Iowa

CLINTON, IA – The Peoria Chiefs got another great pitching performance and beat the Clinton LumberKings 7-2 Monday afternoon for their first four-game sweep in Clinton since 1998. The win, their fifth on the roadtrip, moves the Chiefs over .500 on the season at 44-43 with an 11-8 mark this half.

The Chiefs got on the board against Clinton left Luiz Gohara in the top of the second. With two outs the Chiefs got consecutive singles from Steve Bean and Luis Cruz before Gohara balked. Jhohan Acevedo capitalized with a two-run single up the middle for a 2-0 Chiefs lead.

Clinton grabbed an unearned run in the sixth as Chantz Mack singled home Gianfranco Wawoe after an error by Steve Bean. Peoria got the run back in the next inning as Oscar Mercado singled and scored on an error in centerfield off a Harrison Bader single.

Paul DeJong, who had four home runs in Johnson City this season, slugged his first home run in a Chiefs uniform to lead off the ninth. The line drive home run put the Chiefs on top 4-1. Mercado was hit by an Oscar Morales offering and stole both second and third as Alex DeLeon struck out. Nick Thompson singled home Mercado for a 5-1 Chiefs lead and Bean followed with a RBI double for a 6-1 lead. Cruz continued the scoring with a single to left to plate Bean for the 7-1 lead. Clinton’s Taylor Zeutenhorst homered with two outs in the ninth for the game’s final run.

Matt Pearce (5-9) earned his second straight win and did not allow an earned run over seven innings. He struck out three and allowed one unearned run on six hits with no walks. Anderson Gerdel earned his first save of the season with two innings of work in which he allowed one run on one hit.
