NORMAL – The Town of Normal is looking to adjust a piece of its traffic code which prohibits parking on the same block for more than 24 hours.
City manager Mark Peterson said until now there's been what's known as a "non-tolling" provision, which means even moving the car within the block doesn't restart your time.
"The reason why we had that provision in there is we would have people claim that they actually drove the car and brought it back and put it in essentially the same spot, or near the same spot, and we had no way of knowing that," he said.
The Town Council will vote Tuesday on eliminating the non-tolling provision. Peterson said it has generated a lot of complaints. Plus, the town now has new technology in its parking enforcement vehicle which makes it rather easy to tell if a car has been moved or not.
"Not only do we have the ability to photograph the vehicle, so we can tell exactly what position the vehicle is in, but we also can monitor the location of the valve stems in the vehicle," said Peterson. "So we can know pretty sure if it's been driven."
Peterson added he believes getting rid of the provision will also be fairer to residents.
