Foster Tree

Did you know there are kids in our community who face Christmas without a family? For the hundreds of kids in the
foster system in our county, this is their reality this holiday season. These are kids who have suffered from abuse,
neglect and the trauma of being removed from their homes through no fault of their own.

Together we can transform Christmas for children in need through the Foster Tree.

The Foster Tree is an annual tradition of purchasing Christmas gifts for local children in the foster care system. Local
citizens, businesses and churches partner with DCFS and The Center for Youth and Family Services each Christmas to
bless children who are facing rough circumstances and can often feel forgotten this time of year.

This year we have over 200 kids with nearly 1,200 requests including both needs and wishes, and this is just a small
portion of the overall need in our country. We are inviting you to partner with us to get the word out and help this cause
by promoting this on your radio station.

From now until December 7th, we are asking people to go to https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fwww.forstertree.online&c=E,1,ypqfit03KCE7mkATG3Mkdcby2jTkMUfHSvhHkz-JaL1dqpEIUANXnb4AVvhQA-LGIcdDAxWHB81lLi6b6tcYyiXEjqnemq4MhI02lelJ9GlIDdm2A5K-9T96dw,,&typo=1 and help with gift requests. At the
Foster Tree online, you can help by:
• Selecting a gift to buy yourself. Once purchased you can drop it off for us to deliver.
• Giving toward the purchase of a specific gift. We will do all the work for you!
• Donate directly to fund the Foster Tree.

We can change Christmas for a child in need. Will you help us to make a difference this holiday season?

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
