CHICAGO – In one of his final actions as governor, Pat Quinn has killed a bill that would have allowed bobcat hunting in the state.
The measure, which passed in early December last year and would have opened up a season for hunting the species that was recently removed from the threatened species list.
Supporters said bobcats are becoming a nuisance and allowing them to be hunted will help control the population. Opponents said the issued needed further investigation.
Quinn said trophy hunting is what led to bobcats being put on the threatened species list in 1977 and that’s one reason he signed the veto.
