SPRINGFIELD – She was a no-show at a hearing on the current fiscal year’s spending in the absence of a state budget, but the Illinois Comptroller’s letter to a state Senator highlights the growing backlog of state government bills.
In a letter to Senator Daniel Biss (D-Skokie) from Comptroller Leslie Munger obtained by Illinois News Network the Comptroller says 90 percent of the state’s financial obligations through court orders, consent decrees, and statutory continuing appropriation are being paid. But the letter says the lack of a balanced budget is causing a bill backlog of nearly $6 billion.
Munger ended her letter to Biss saying the best thing to do for the people of Illinois is to pass a balanced budget. An agenda for Tuesday’s Senate Human Services Committee had listed Munger as part of the first panel but she was not in attendance.
