BLOOMINGTON-NORMAL – A cancer survivor in Bloomington-Normal is trying to give back to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for saving his life seven years ago.

Cael Wolfe was diagnosed with cancer as a kid and recieved treatment from St. Jude. Now, over the past few years, he helps to organize a fundraiser to support St. Jude.

He spoke with WJBC’s Scott Miller.

“It’s so important to me to see all of these people getting more and more involved in St. Jude because they saved my life. I can’t thank St. Jude enough and I want to do the most I can for St. Jude,” said Wolfe.

“I love seeing other people who have no relation to the hospital or no relation to anyone who has had cancer get involved.”

Schools in District 87 and Unit 5 will have shirts on sale and will be accepting donations for St. Jude. The fundraiser’s goal is $20,000.

Wolfe said his cancer treatment cost roughly three million dollars, and St. Jude paid every penny.

Washington Elementary teacher Mrs. Killian say’s you can show up and donate to any school affiliated to District 87 and Unit 5. She joined the Scott Miller Show this week.

“It’s just a way to show that we support kids and that’s what we are all about. Right now we know of a student at Oakland, a student a Bloomington Junior High and a student at Stevenson who are right now current patient’s battling childhood cancer,” Killian said.

Again donations will be accepted at all schools in Unit 5 and District 87.

If you want to donate online head to Fundraising.StJude.Org and type in ‘BN Unite to Fight 2024’ to donate to Cael’s event.

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
