BLOOMINGTON – Bloomington public works crews are gearing up for the Spring Bulk Waste Pickup in May.

Bloomington Public Works Director Mose Rickey says public works crews will be out beginning May 6, and hope to finish by May 17, depending on the amount of material, weather and other factors.

Crews will follow the 2024 pickup calendar, which can be found on the City of Bloomington’s website.

Rickey spoke with WJBC’s Scott Miller.

“Weather can be a fickle mistress and there can be other outside contributing factors but we will get through all of our zones and make sure everyone experiences a free bulk pick up,” Rickey said.

“The alder-people on the city council believe these services should be provided to the residents and they are going to get their services top-notch.”

The free pick up will begin in Zone 1 Orange on May 6. Leaves, brush and trimmings will be picked up at the same time as bulk.

Sod, dirt, concrete, rock, shingles, and appliances are not included in the Spring 2024 Free Bulk Pickup. Sod, dirt, concrete, rock, and shingles can be collected curbside, but Solid Waste Program customers must call Public Works for an estimate and to arrange for collection.

Solid Waste customers may take leaves, brush, trimmings, bulk, sod, dirt, concrete, rock, shingles, and appliances to the Citizen Convenience Center located at 402 S. East Street in Bloomington (south of the Bloomington Public Library). There is an additional charge for sod, dirt, concrete, rock, and shingles taken to the center. The center is open from 7 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday; 7 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. Wednesday. It is closed on Sunday, Monday, and holidays.  Regular household trash and Household Hazardous Waste are not accepted at the center.

Rickey invites all residents to visit the City of Bloomington’s website for more information on free bulk-pick up.

Daily updates will be posted at Bloomingtonil.gov/solidwaste.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
