SPRINGFIELD – Let’s go from college savings to retirement savings.

State Treasurer Mike Frerichs wants college grads to be able to use unspent 529 funds to start a Roth IRA.

“Unfortunately, state law only allows tax deductions on contributions to 529 (plans) for certain approved expenses,” said Frerichs. “That’s why we are working to change state law. We want more people saving to be financially secure, their kids getting a better education without being saddled with so much debt, and we also want families to be saving for retirement.”

Lawmakers are already working on it. A Chicago news conference Tuesday also featured an Illinois State Board of Education employee – and new mom – excited about her child’s future.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
